Thug Cops Deserve Happiness Too

The former University of California at Davis police officer who calmly pepper-sprayed peaceful student protesters at point-blank range has received more than 38-thousand US dollars in worker's compensation for the suffering he experienced after the incident.
Lieutenant John Pike has been awarded the settlement to compensate for the psychiatric trauma he experienced following the event.
Pike was the focus of a disturbing video that went viral in 2011 in which he casually douses students demonstrating against tuition increases with pepper-spray.
The officer claims he has had to change his phone number, email address and even move homes several times after the incident to avoid angry and threatening messages.
Following the incident Pike was suspended with pay. That year he earned over 119-thousand US dollars.
The protest was a part of the Occupy movement.

COMMENTS:
Guardian reader Red Panda writes:
"Death threats to him and his family are out of line, but any cop who point-blank pepper-sprays peaceful protestors sitting on the ground deserves "depression and anxiety." It's tempting to say HE deserves to be pepper-sprayed in the face just as they were. He certainly doesn't deserve to keep his job without some serious retraining and attitude adjustment."

R 4 Wombat from Reddit makes these points:
"The students were not actually breaking any laws or university policies at the time of the incident. The UC Davis police department is not authorized to carry the kind of pepper spray Pike was using, and it is not designed to be deployed at such a close range. The only thing these kids were guilty of at the time was catching the ire of the administration

San Francisco Gate reader M Ba Man writes:
"Absolutely nuts. Who says it doesn't pay to be a thug?! He nonchalantly sprayed those non-violent students like they were roaches- and he's the victim? Disgusting."
NOTES:
-Earlier this year UC Davis settled out of court paying 1-million US dollars to 3-dozen students who were pepper-sprayed
-Pike was awarded a total of $38,055.
-Pike left the campus police force in July 2012.
-Some experts have described Pike's use of pepper-spray as a violation against humanity. The pepper-spray he used was incredibly strong. Some claim it can be viewed as a chemical weapon and what his actions were equivalent to torture.
-John Pike has not spoken out about his actions, nor defend them. He has not offered an apology or an explanation.

COMMENTS:
Boing Boing reader Hugh Stimson writes:
"I think we can assign blame to the individual who took the action as well as to the institution that trained the individual to take that sort of action under those sort of circumstances. And we should."

DMAC 0331 from The Los Angeles Times believes:
"Occupy protesters are nothing but spoiled adults who don't want to work, would rather get high on dope instead of being productive citizens, and desire big liberal government to support and provide for them. I have an idea, quit wasting your time "occupying" and go get a job instead."

Huffington Post reader Brandon Cantrell puts in:
"Depression and anxiety felt after performing a violent act on non-violent protesters is called guilt. One of the side effects of having a conscience. That's something a lot of police seem to have forgotten. Too many years of being the dogs of evil men I guess with selfish twisted agendas.
Thanks, Marc
Up next, would you ever let a learner driver loose on the roof? Someone has in Hefei....
